Symposium II: Which city for whom? Democratising the city

- 24th to 26th February 2006 -

In many cities in the global South and North there is resistance against neoliberal globalisation, especially in basic organisations of social movements. The political actions cover a broad spectrum, all political activists though are confronted again and again with municipal institutions and local politics. Often basic organisations take on formerly ”public” tasks and in doing so are in danger of not following their initial demands anymore. What demands are to be made on municipal institutions against this background? Which elements of cooperation are promising, and why are they promising? In which ways are basic organisations dealing with the withdrawal of local institutions from formerly public tasks? What we possibilities to counteract the possible appropriation in the course of neoliberal reorganisation?
