The Institute for Theology and Politics (ITP)
The ITP was founded in 1993 by people of the Latin America solidarity movement. It is independent of church or state. In 1993, the focus was to search for new possibilities of solidary action between North and South. Education, advisory service for groups and initiatives as well as research into social movements were in the centre of the work during the first years. Today, we are much more involved in the globalisation critical movement.
The work of the ITP is based on the theology of liberation, and we have always been cooperating with organisations in the global South: Our topics are globalisation from below, international solidarity, struggles against poverty and injustice.
In a time shaped by the economisation of many social sectors and the cutthroat competition of ”global players”, we search for new ways of politics in order to overcome poverty and injustice and establish a world for all. Such a search can only be carried out on equal terms and in cooperation with people from the global South. In doing so, we focus on ”globalisation from below”, on the cooperation of social movements in the global South and North.
With ”The south of the cities” we want to address ourselves to the possibilities of alternative politics in global cities, focusing on the work and situation of basic organisations and NGOs of social movements in the cities.
